This study, sponsored by the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET), analyzes power quality issues in grid-connected wind farms across Tamil Nadu, using DIgSILENT Power Factory simulations and extensive field measurements. Three case studies were conducted: Peedampalli (fixed-speed induction generators, 3.6 MW, 78 unique events), Pethappampatty (variable-speed DFIG, 33.6 MW, 178 unique events), and Chinnaputhur (variable-speed PMSG, 123 MW, 22 unique events), with monitoring periods of 29–43 days. Power quality analyzers (Dranetz, Fluke, Hioki) recorded transients, sags, swells, interruptions, flicker, and harmonics, with voltage sags being the most frequent (26-40% voltage drops) due to sudden load variations and faults. Variable-speed generators (DFIG & PMSG) demonstrated significantly better power quality performance than fixed-speed generators, with fewer events, lower flicker (Pst/Plt < 1), and better frequency stability. The PMSG with full converter interface showed superior fault ride-through capability, maintaining DC-link voltage stability during grid faults. Recommendations include adopting Type 3/4 generators, implementing LVRT requirements, and deploying dynamic reactive support (STATCOM, DVR) to enhance grid stability. This comprehensive study provides valuable insights for improving wind farm integration into India's weak rural grid networks.
