A Novel Hybrid Energy System for supplying isolated loads with FPGA based energy management scheme

Summary

NIT Tiruchirappalli developed a novel hybrid energy system integrating wind-driven WRIG (3 hp), solar PV (2 kW), and diesel-driven SCIG (3 hp) to supply isolated loads, with FPGA-based energy management for rural electrification applications. The WRIG employs a simple single-inverter control strategy maintaining constant 415 V, 50 Hz stator output for variable wind speeds (1150-1500 rpm) and loads (0.75-2.25 kW), validated through extensive experimentation. A boost converter (10 kHz) with P&O MPPT algorithm extracts maximum solar power (up to 1.46 kW) at >84% efficiency, while SCIG provides backup power at super-synchronous speeds (1520-1590 rpm). DSTATCOM based on SRF theory and FPGA (Spartan 3AN, 50 MHz) compensates reactive power, reducing THD from 17.4% to 3.6% and improving power factor from 0.783 to 0.990, while also transferring real power (up to 50% of load) from PV-battery system. The energy management algorithm monitors load (PL), WRIG power (PWRIG), PV power, and battery voltage, deciding when to add loads, transfer power via DSTATCOM, shed low-priority loads, or start SCIG. Simulation and experimental results validated stable operation with capacitor banks (2 kVAR) and DSTATCOM support for loads up to 4 kW, while the system also operates as a 50 Hz inverter in no-wind conditions. The project yielded multiple publications, with Ph.D. theses receiving POSOCO Power Systems Awards, and provides a cost-effective, scalable solution for off-grid renewable energy systems.
