Offshore Wind Profile Measurement at Dhanushkodi

Summary

A landmark offshore wind measurement campaign was conducted by NIWE at Dhanushkodi, Rameshwaram, featuring India's first 100m meteorological mast specially designed with corrosion-resistant specifications, installed to validate the promising offshore wind potential identified through earlier studies including satellite SAR data, SODAR measurements, and collaborative assessments by RISO/DTU, INCOIS, and Scottish Development International. The one-year measurement campaign (October 2013–September 2014), with instrumentation recording 10-minute average wind data at six heights, revealed an annual mean wind speed of 8.65 m/s at 102m with a corresponding wind power density of 536 W/m², while wind frequency analysis demonstrated that modern turbines would operate within their cut-in to cut-out range (4–25 m/s) for approximately 90% of the time. The study also documented low shear exponent (0.043), very low turbulence intensity (TI ~0.06–0.07, placing it in IEC Category C), consistent inter-annual wind speeds, and excellent correlation (R² > 97%) between mast and LIDAR measurements. These encouraging results affirm strong offshore wind potential in the Rameshwaram region, supporting India's National Offshore Wind Energy Policy, while NIWE emphasizes the need for continued long-term measurements to develop comprehensive bankable datasets for project financing.
