This report by NIWE analyzes the feasibility of wind-solar hybrid power generation at 24 windy sites across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, using actual wind data from 100m met-masts and solar data from the SRRA network. The analysis reveals that wind generation at these sites ranges from 1.85 to 2.91 MU per MW annually, while solar generation ranges from 1.40 to 1.59 MU per MW, with hybrid systems producing a combined 3.37 to 4.41 MU per MW—an average increase of 64% over standalone wind. The study demonstrates the complementary nature of the two resources, with solar compensating during low-wind summer months and wind peaking during the monsoon when solar output declines. Based on a 10 km circular area (314 sq.km), the report estimates potential wind capacities of 224–1884 MW and solar additions of 1.5 to 7 times that capacity, concluding that hybridization offers a robust pathway to achieve India's 175 GW renewable energy target by 2022 while ensuring more stable grid supply.
