WIND ENERGY TECHNOLOGY
for the students of PGDC in Renewable Energy and Grid Interface
conducted by NISE in collaboration with NPTI

The Skill Development and Training Division of NIWE had successfully conducted the special training course on "Wind Energy Technology" for the students of the PGDC in Renewable Energy and Grid Interface conducted by NISE in collaboration with NPTI. The course addressed all aspects of Wind Power starting from what is wind to wind resources assessment, project implementation and operations & maintenance aspects in a focused manner along with financial and policy aspects towards going for economically viable wind farm projects. 10 participants had participated in the course.

Before technical sessions started, Dr. P. Kanagavel, Director & Head, SDT Division, NIWE had welcomed the participants and inaugurated the training course.

The following 22 classroom sessions were scheduled during the course, which was handled by 11 NIWE Engineers / Scientists.

·         Installation and Commissioning of Wind Turbine

·         SCADA and Condition monitoring system of Wind farms

Glimpse of Classroom Sessions

RE facilities visit at NIWE

The participants visited the Renewable Energy facilities available in NIWE campus, such as, Water Pumping Windmill, Vertical & Horizontal Axis Small Wind Turbines, Wind-Solar Hybrid System, Wind Turbine Nacelle Assembly facility, Metrological Mast, Biogas Plant and SRRA Station.

Factory Visit 

The participants visited the training facility of M/s. Vestas Wind Technology India Pvt. Ltd., at Ammapettai and learned about wind turbine components, installation, and maintenance. They experienced a Virtual Reality (VR) simulator that showed the layout and working of a wind turbine in detail. The participants also observed a prototype wind turbine with all its major components. A clear and informative presentation helped them understand how wind turbines are assembled and operated.

Study Visits

The participants visited the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre, Taramani and toured its advanced research facilities. They observed the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel (BLWT), one of the largest wind tunnels in India, and learned about technological advancements and innovations in the wind energy sector. The visit also included the Advanced Seismic Testing and Research (ASTaR) laboratory, where participants gained knowledge of modern seismic testing, simulation techniques, and earthquake engineering concepts.

Glimpse of study visit to SERC-CSIR, Chennai

The participants were taken to the southern part of Tamil Nadu to visit the Wind Turbine Test Station at Kayathar, where they gained practical exposure to the testing processes of both small and large wind turbines. They also had the opportunity to climb a meteorological mast (Met Mast) and learn about its operation and significance in wind resource assessment. The participants also had a chance of visiting the wind farms in and around Kayathar.

The participants expressed their appreciation to NIWE for organizing the course, which provided valuable knowledge and insights into Wind Energy. Upon completion of the programme and field visits, they were awarded course certificates by the official of NIWE.
