    Brief Report
CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING PROGRAMME ON "DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF SMALL WIND TURBINE" at NIWE
    held during 27th February - 8th March 2017

NIWE had successfully organized the Capacity Building Training Programme on "Design, Installation and Maintenance of Small Wind Turbine" during 27th February to 8th March 2017 to address all aspects of Small Wind Turbines. The course was attended by 25 (23 male and 2 female) participants from 10 States of the Country with diverse background. The training course was inaugurated by Dr. Rajesh Katyal, Deputy Director General & Head, OW&IB, NIWE.

The main objective of the training course was to build the Capacity of participants on small wind energy technology and practically trained them on how to design a small wind turbine. In addition to knowledge transfer, special skills were also taught to the participants on O&M and installation and commissioning of small wind turbines.

    Participants during Practical Classes

The resource persons for the training course was scientists / engineers of NIWE, Small Wind Turbine Manufacturers, Experts and Engineers, who have contributed significantly for the development of small wind turbine technology. The design, construction and maintenance of small wind turbine part has done by the Mr. Jorge Ayarza, Engineer and Founder of Minvayu, Auroville, Tamil Nadu near Pondicherry with his team who are already engaged in design, construction, supply and providing training for the rural mechanics to build, install and maintain low cost wind turbines with local materials.

The following topics were taught during the training course:

    • Introduction and Status of Wind Energy Technology
    • Small Wind Turbines and Hybrid Systems
    • Small Wind Turbine Manufacturing
    • Blade carving
    • Coil construction
    • Metal Welding
    • Mould preparation
    • Generator Assembly
    • Fibreglass Casting
    • Generator testing
    • Turbine assembly and balance
    • Tower assembly and Balance of System

Apart from the class room theoretical sessions, Laboratory practical sessions were conducted on the above mentioned subjects and all the participants were fully trained on these works.

The NIWE Campus facilities were also showcased to the participants for practical exposure, wherein they had an opportunity of understanding about the Wind and Solar Resource Assessment set up and how the Hybrid System (Wind - Solar - Diesel) system works.

Dr. Rajesh Katyal, Director General and Head, OW&IB has delivered the Valedictory address and distributed the Course Certificates to the participants.

The training was useful to build the capacity of participants who are Engineers, Diploma and ITI holders, which will ease the large number of Installation of small wind turbine systems. As these training targeting rural participants, the locally trained mechanics will always be readily available for operation and maintenance of the system and also for immediate repair activities to ensure continuous power generation.

This is a good opportunity for the rural engineers, diploma and ITI holders to increase their self-reliance to design, construct their own turbines, using locally available materials and run their own business serving the villages in their respective areas.
