India's Wind Potential Atlas at 120m agl

Summary

The India Wind Potential Atlas at 120m agl, published by the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) under India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, estimates the country's total installable onshore wind power capacity at 695 GW—with 340 GW on wasteland, 347 GW on cultivable land, and 8 GW in forest areas—using advanced WRF-based meso-micro coupled numerical modelling at a high 500m resolution, validated against 406 actual measurement sites across India (achieving a mean absolute error of about 5%). The atlas identifies the highest potential (CUF > 32%) in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, with scattered high-wind pockets in Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan, and medium potential in Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, and the North Eastern states; it also incorporates detailed land-use exclusions (settlements, water bodies, protected areas, slopes over 20°, and elevations above 1500m), sensitivity analyses for varying land availability scenarios, a separate assessment of unexploited (greenfield) wind sites, and a preliminary offshore wind map up to India's Exclusive Economic Zone, making it a foundational planning tool for developers, policymakers, and investors in India's renewable energy sector.
