2nd Special International Training Course on
"Solar Resource Assessment and Development of Solar Power Plant"
held during 15th March - 07th April 2023

The SDT Division has successfully conducted the 2nd Special International Training Course on "Solar Resource Assessment and Development of Solar Power Plant" during 15th March to 07th April 2023 sponsored by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India under ITEC programme.

A total of 28 participants attended from the following 16 countries. Azerbaijan, Cote D'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Tunisia and Uzbekistan.

The inaugural function commenced with the Welcome Address by the Course Coordinator, Dr. P. Kanagavel, Director & Head, SDT & IM Division, NIWE. The course was inaugurated by Dr. Jai Prakash, Deputy Director General, National Institute of Solar Energy and Dr. Nikhil PG, Assistant Director (Tech.), National Institute of Solar Energy was present during the inaugural function.

Participants’ self-introduction
   

During the 24 days course, 32 classroom lectures were held apart from practical training, study visits to solar power plant and solar panels manufacturing factory. The course content was handled by Scientists and Engineers of NIWE and solar industrial experts who have years of experience in the field.

The course started with briefing about Solar Radiation Resource and addressed all aspects of Solar Generation System. The following topics were delivered during the course;

  • Off - Grid and On – Grid Solar Photovoltaic Systems
  • System Design, Component Selection & Sizing for MW Scale Solar PV Plant
  • Requirements of Testing & Certification as per IEC and other Standards
  • Wind – Solar Hybrid System
  • Role of NIWE in Wind and Solar Power Developments
  • Renewable Energy Policies
  • Civil Works and selection of Mounting Structures for Solar Power Plants

The participants were taken to the manufacturing facilities of J P Solar, Kondangi, Chennai which provided a good grasp for participants about the various aspects and sequencing in the manufacture of solar panels. This included the layup process, Buzzing process, testing, followed by the lamination process and the participants interacted very well with the senior technical personnel in the factory by seeking clarifications.

The participants learned various process of Solar Resource assessment including installation & commissioning of SRRA station, data collection, processing and analysis through practical sessions held at NIWE campus.

The participants were taken to the southern part of Tamil Nadu to visit Wind Turbine Test Station at Kayathar, where they got an exposure on wind - solar hybrid system, Solar Water pump system at Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu and 100 MW Solar Power Plant of NLC India Limited at Kayathar.

The valedictory function was conducted on 6th April 2023. Dr. P. Kanagavel, Course Coordinator enlightened the gathering with the course summary by highlighting the activities of 24 days of the training. Also the feedback given by the participants was summarized and consolidated. The toppers in the assessment conducted were also displayed during the presentation. Thereafter the participants were asked to share their feedbacks about the training conducted. Some of the training participants shared their feedbacks and expressed extreme happiness in which the training was conducted. They had also well commented about the hospitality shown by everyone at NIWE, adding that the organizing team had done excellent job, by which all the participants had a smooth and enjoyable stay at Chennai. The course structure and organization of the training was highly appreciated by the participants. The participants were very much satisfied by the quality of lectures and hospitality they found in NIWE, Chennai, India.
