WIND TURBINE TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS
Specially for African Countries
held during 1st to 24th February 2017

       The International Training Course on "Wind Turbine Technology and Applications" was successfully organized by the ITCS unit during 01st to 24th February 2017. This is a special training course for African Countries under AIFS - III. The objective of the International Course is to address all aspects of Wind Power starting from introduction to wind and its technology, wind resource assessment, installation, operation and maintenance aspects of wind farms along with financial analysis and CDM benefits. The course was attended by 26 Participants from 8 countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda)

       The training course was inaugurated by Dr. Rajesh Katyal, Deputy Director General and Head OW&IB NIWE and Dr. G. Giridhar, Deputy Director General and Head, SRRA, NIWE by lighting the traditional Kuthuvilakku.

        The course content of the training was very comprehensive and the lectures of the course were handled by eminent Scientists, Engineers and other wind energy professionals from NIWE, wind turbine industries and academic institutions, who have years of experience. During the 24 days programme, Forty Two classroom lectures were handled apart from practical training, field & factory visits to provide complete knowledge transfer to the participants.

        As part of the training programme, the practical training was arranged on Wind Resource Assessment, instrumentation, Testing & R&D equipments apart from factory visit to M/s Gamesa Large Wind Turbine Manufacturing facilities, Mamandur where they had a chance of listening from the industry experts who are actually in the process of making wind turbines.

         As part of the study visit, all the participants were taken to southern part of Tamil Nadu to visit Wind Turbine Test / Research Station located at Kayathar, where they got exposure on small and large wind turbine testing process apart from visiting wind farms in and around Kanyakumari, where wind turbines are installed in large numbers like coconut trees.

      The participants were also visited the wind tunnel facility of the structural Engineering Research centre located at Taramani, Chennai.

      Dr. Rajesh Katyal, Deputy Director General, and Head, OW&IB, NIWE distributed the course certificates to all the participants.

        The course structure and organization of training was highly appreciated by the participants. The participants were very much satisfied by the quality of lectures and hospitality they found in India.
